CLAIR / Veterinary oral health
CLAIR is a saliva-based adjunct in development for use alongside the oral examination. The proposed workflow combines collection, controlled processing on a centrifugal microfluidic disc, and optical readout to support triage and the owner conversation.
Development boundary: CLAIR is not for sale or clinical use. Analytical performance, workflow timing, and clinical utility remain to be established for each panel.
01 / Intended role
A saliva-based adjunct for the conversation about further dental assessment.
CLAIR asks whether a quantitative saliva panel can add useful evidence alongside the awake oral exam. The first planned setting is general veterinary practices with active dental services.
02 / Proposed workflow

Define oral collection and checks for sample quality.
Develop centrifugal processing, reaction control, and assay timing.
Evaluate optical readout alongside the clinical context.
03 / Candidate saliva panel
The combined panel and validity controls are a differentiation hypothesis. Multiplexing alone does not establish disease specificity.
Panel composition, thresholds, and interpretation require analytical and clinical validation. CRP remains a separate research track.
04 / Evidence before rollout
Clinical added value remains unproven. Study size and timing depend on feasibility, a funded protocol, and statistical planning.
Analytical readiness
Evaluate repeatability, interference, sample recovery, and collection and process controls. Report invalid samples.
Independent clinical evaluation
Compare the awake exam, panel alone, and exam plus panel against a blinded reference assessment using anesthetized probing and dental radiographs. Lock the panel and thresholds before independent validation and include realistic confounders.
Customer validation
Study workflow fit, owner understanding, willingness to pay, support needs, and repeat use with veterinary practices.
05 / Clinic collaboration
The proposed first partners are general veterinary practices with active dental services.
Discuss clinic participationEvaluate workflow, purchasing, and operating fit.
Evaluate collection, interpretation, usability, and training needs.
The intended beneficiaries of clearer oral-health conversations.
Onboarding, interpretation guidance, troubleshooting, and consumable replenishment are proposed support needs. Reader, software, and per-test pricing require validation.
Platform foundation
CLAIR draws on lab-on-disc, assay-development, imaging, kinetic-analysis, motor-control, and cartridge engineering experience. Manufacturing, quality-control, and regulatory and commercialization planning remain part of development.
